What is the CIA triad?

The CIA Triad is a fundamental concept related to systems, data, and information that is at the core of cybersecurity strategy and planning. “CIA” is short for confidentiality, integrity, and availability, and provides a framework for organizations to protect data from unauthorized access, modification, and destruction, and to ensure that data is available and accessible when necessary.

Confidentiality means preserving authorized restrictions on information access and disclosure, including means for protecting personal privacy and proprietary information.

Integrity refers to guarding against improper information modification or destruction, and includes information non-repudiation and authenticity.

Availability requires ensuring timely and reliable access to and use of information.

The role of the CIA triad in cybersecurity.

Implementing appropriate measures to preserve confidentiality, integrity, and availability empowers organizations to protect themselves against potential cyber threats and maintain trust with their customers and other stakeholders. In order to ensure all three aspects of the CIA triad, especially integrity, organizations must maintain non-repudiation, or protection against an individual falsely denying having performed a particular action, such as creating information, sending a message, approving information, and receiving a message.
